Historically speaking, the popularity of the .380 can probably be attributed to just one pistol: the Kel Tec P3AT. Although .380 series pistols have been around for a century, many of them can be written off as unreliable boutique or niche pistols. Many older .380s are spatially inefficient: Walther PPK, Bersa Thunder .380, SIG P230, and P232, as examples. They are all excellent firearms, but woefully inefficient when considered as a ratio of weight and size to capacity and power. The Kel Tec P3AT breathed new life into this listless format by offering a true pocket pistol that was inexpensive and reasonably reliable. It sold countless copies. The mainstream quickly took hold, with the Ruger LCP providing another similar option from a trusted manufacturer, followed by more and more pocket guns from Kahr, Smith & Wesson, and the slightly larger than pocket size but extremely triggering model. 42 Glock. The gain in platforms designed for the .380 and the rise of technology enhancing the terminal's performance of what many consider to be a mouse created this energy cycle that kept the category growing.

Through this co-evolution of the cartridge and the platform that uses it, somehow the .380 became less of a last-minute deterrent and more of a lethal cartridge. To say that a weapon/cartridge combination is "effective" is to say that it meets the FBI standard of 12 to 18 inches of ballistic gel penetration. Projectiles that can penetrate at least 12 inches and produce good expansion resulting in significant permanent and temporary wound cavities are generally considered adequate for self defense. There are surprisingly few .380 cameras that meet this standard.

Using the Ammo To Go gel test with a Ruger LCP shooting through 4-ply fabric, I only included rounds that penetrated more than 12 inches. None of the .380 cartridges penetrated more than 18 inches, so excessive penetration should not be considered.

Should SIG be higher on this list? Possibly. Good penetration 14.36" and second best expansion [for rounds that penetrated at least 12"] of almost a half inch at .48". It's actually strange that this round performed so well considering I was pushing an average 90 gram bullet at a velocity that was 887 fps slower than average, resulting in energy similar to that of grass from 157 ft/lbs. I have seen this before in other SIG cameras where other competing rounds in the class will drive bigger and faster bullets. Perhaps it translates to less felt backtracking? Is this a good compromise? And does the energy in a pocket gun really matter if the penetration and expansion numbers are already there?

The Winchester Ranger Talon, 95-grain HP had great penetration: fourth highest of the 19 cartridges tested with 16.2" expansion. It also packs a lot of punch (well, for a .380), pushing a round of 95g a little bigger than usual at 907 fps a little faster than usual generating 174 ft/lbs of energy However, expansion was weak to non-existent in the .35 This excellent performance was held back by its inability to generate as large a wound cavity as the other rounds on this list.

The Golden Saber may have been slightly superior to the Ranger Claw and the raw score difference of just 3 points proves it. Penetration was 16.1”, just one-tenth of an inch less than the Ranger Talon, and expansion was 2-hundreds of an inch more at 0.37”, not much either. The Golden Saber showed good energy values, moving a large-for-its-class 102gr round at 871fps, generating 172 ft/lbs of energy. The wound cavities in the gel also look quite impressive.

Winchester and Remington are generally tied for paper efficiency. However, looking at the markings in the gel, it could give the Remington the advantage for generating a larger wound cavity, although we will need more data to confirm that this happens consistently. We'll call it a draw for now.

Do you have the NEED? THE NEED FOR SPEED? The lightweight 80gr DPX shows the best velocity at a whopping 1091 fps (but of course you're pushing a tiny 80gr bullet). This results in 211 ft/lbs of energy, one of the highest numbers in the test. 12.76 inches of penetration is on the right side of acceptable, and all that velocity gave the DPX much better expansion, at a respectable 0.47 inches, the third-highest for cartridges penetrating over 12”. However, note that the extension seems inconsistent:

Glock 44 Review

The top penetrator in our test tore through 4 layers of fabric and 17.4" of gel, putting it right at the threshold of the FBI optimal efficiency level of 18" of penetration. The 102-gram cartridge is the same weight as the Remington Golden Saber #4, but the Ultimate Defense pumps out that payload at 896 fps, or 25 fps faster than the Sabres. 182 ft/lbs of energy is nothing to scoff at, but the paltry, non-existent .35" expansion is. Honestly, I'd feel better with the SIG ammo in the #5 over this non-expanding Ultimate Defense. But if what you want is pure penetration (hehehe) this is your joint.

Another top 5 list and another federal circuit on top. Even with some arbitrary mathematical formula attached to the list, you can't beat the Fed, which seems to make the best defensive round in the defensive pistol caliber lineup with the venerable HST.

Hence the argument for a pistol like the Glock 42. While not as powerful as its cousin, the sub-compact 9mm Glock 26, the Glock 42 is more controllable. Although the .380 caliber is relatively low, it also has over a century of load development and is capable of up to 294 foot pounds with Buffalo Bore +P rounds.

Built in the USA and released in 2014, the G42 is Glock's smallest pistol to date. This subcompact trigger gun is truly the "baby" of all Glocks. With an empty weight of under 14 ounces and an ultra-compact frame size, the G42 is a unique carry choice. However, the small frame size comes at a price - the gun's standard capacity is only 6+1. For those environments or occasions where true concealment is essential, the G42 reinforces the plate.

I recently spent an afternoon at the range with a Glock 42 and fed it hundreds of rounds of different types of ammo. I included self defense ammo like Hornady Critical Defense and Speer Gold Dot 90 GR bullets. As expected, the Toyota Camry guns (Glock) handled everything I loaded with no problems.

Overall, I was pleased with the G42's performance - especially compared to similar options on the market. Shooting the G42 was a relatively "smooth" experience with little muzzle flip. Shooting the G42 one-handed was a breeze, especially for someone who used to carry a 9mm. The frame is compact but not too compact and I believe that plays a real part in recoil management. Even with fairly tame .380 ACP ammo, some "pocket" pistols (Looking at you Ruger LCP) on the market aren't nearly as easy to shoot.

People usually worry about guns being too big to conceal when considering CCW options. This is certainly not the case here with the G42. The smallest Glock made is something I'm sure almost anyone out there could conceal without any problems.

Most people considering this gun are probably concerned that it is too small to shoot effectively.

The G42 is obviously extremely small with a smaller frame size than even your typical "compact" handgun. That being said, the G42 wasn't that hard to shoot. I believe it was the light color of the .380 ACP that helped with this feature. This gun was manageable to control and shoot accurately at a typical self defense range of 7 yards.

Compared to other subcompact 380 ACP pistols I've shot, this one was surprisingly easy on the hands. Later shots also feel easier than I expected with the G42. Even after a few hundred rounds through, the weapons may not have been screaming for mercy. In other words, the G42 was still quite comfortable to shoot.

Although it is quite short at only 4.13 inches with the larger magazine, I was able to get enough of a grip that felt secure.

What's The Best 380 Pocket Pistol?

At 14 ounces, the G42 is an absolutely lightweight gun. This could be a factor for some and if so, you will be happy.

These days, most of us won't be impressed with the 6+1 capacity. Honestly, it's not that great. Especially when you consider newer pistols like the Sig P365 or Glock 43X that offer 10+1 in 9mm.

If you want a Glock 42 that is a little more concealable, you can ask for help with that lack of capability. Backup magazine extensions are available such as the HYVE Technologies version for those who want an additional 2 round extra capacity.

Taking this gun to the range and firing hundreds of rounds allowed me to get a feel for the trigger. As for the Glock's stock trigger, it was decent. I wouldn't say it's good...but decent. The gun I tested had a fairly predictable break and clear reset. I ran 10 pull tests and they averaged just under 5 pounds. for the gun I tested.

Other reviews of the G42 have shown dissatisfaction with the activation of the G42. I can say that compared to options like the Ruger LCP and LCP 2, this trigger is excellent. I noticed a short intake and a clean break that is simply not present in "pocket pistols".

When it comes to sights, we're used to having several options, and that's the case with the G42. The gun I tested was equipped with Heavy Ameriglow sights. Target contrast and subsequent shots were simple – especially when combined with the light standard.

I'll start by saying that I'm already quite comfortable with the ergonomics and feature layout of the Glock.

Being such a compact gun, the magazine release and slide release feel accessible and easy to operate. I often struggle with operating functions on ultra-compact pistols, so I was happy not to have that problem with the G42.

I expected the black to match the standard grips, but this is more of a shiny black metal. This matches their other upgrades. The Allen key included in the box looks like it made a mark on the side during shipping. But it's not everyone's fault.

Man what a difference it makes for my Glock 42. I couldn't get a perfect grip with the original Glock mags. Installing the +2 mag attachment on the black now gives me full control. The gun feels very comfortable in the hand. Very good weapon handling and they look good.

Great product. However, the video showing how to install the extension should be edited. After trimming the tabs. Place the extension plate on the table and insert the plastic part so that the knob is in the hole. Compress the magazine spring and start sliding the magazine onto the base plate. It snaps right into place. I tried it several times as written in the video, but the insert plate slipped into the magazine and was almost impossible to separate. I had parts flying. Then I did it my way. Quick, easy, no flying parts and no problems with the insert plate.

I've been looking and these mag extensions are the best. Bigger, more powerful and will allow you to have a full hand on the G42 handle. A weapon without one of these is useless.

They come in colors, but the aluminum base with hose wrap looks and feels really good.
